This movie has been hyped since it was first announced. Following the death of Heath Ledger, who plays The Joker, the hype only got bigger. The latest movie in the Batman saga brings Christian Bale back in the role, and Christopher Nolan has once again proved that a comic book movie can be made that will not feel like a comic book movie. This Batman is darker than previous movie incarnations, and this Joker is definitely darker than the one we saw before.

This movie talks us into Gotham’s Mafia circuit as Eric Roberts leads the mob in this film. The mob not only has to deal with Batman, but a man that runs their finances turning against them, and then they have to deal with the insanity that is The Joker. This man is ruthless and psychotic. He will do anything and everything he wants just because he likes to. Heath Ledger, in this his last role, is terrifying. Bale also shines in this one, but he might have been a bit out shined in this one by Ledger. The Joker commanded the screen whenever he was on it.

We see turn a city upside down, and we also see him succeed in destroying the city’s one great hope. However, this does not fully happen because Batman takes the fall for Harvey Dent, who after suffering burns to his face and losing his lady love turns into Two Face. For two and a half hours, the viewer is taken into chaos, and that is where the viewer stays. There is no happy ending at the end of this film. I don’t think there was meant to be. The Dark Knight is in my mind one of the best movies of 2008. Definitely a film to go see.
